Celebrity Big Brother’s best bits

Series one 2001

Winner: Jack Dee. The first ever series of Celebrity Big Brother aired four years after the civilian show arrived on screens and was in aid of Comic Relief. Comedian Jack beat Anthea Turner, Chris Eubank, Claire Sweeney, Keith Duffy and Vanessa Feltz in the franchise’s first ever live final. His win came after an escape attempt, where he simply walked out the back gate of the Elstree house after trying to dig his way out of the garden with a rake. He was found 30 minutes later still in the Big Brother compound, lying down next to a portable office with his face smeared with mud as camouflage.

Inaugural champion: Comedian Jack Dee was the first winner of Celebrity Big Brother back in 2001, and raised eyebrows when he tried to dig his way out of the garden with a rake

Stand out moment:  Despite starring just six celebrities and a time length of eight days, there was no shortage of drama, including the iconic Vanessa Feltz meltdown on day three. After being nominated for eviction, the TV presenter, dressed in leopard print and wearing shades, started scrawling obscenities on the kitchen table in chalk, ignoring Big Brother’s demands to stop.

Series two 2002

Winner: Mark Owen. While CBB was initially conceived as a one off, its huge success meant Channel 4 bought it back as a standalone series to run after the civilian show wrapped. Raising money for charity again, the show was extended to ten days but still featured just six celebrities. Take That singer Mark Owen was announced the winner with 77% of the vote. The star broke down in tears as he left the house, overwhelmed by the public support after retreating from the limelight in recent years.

Stand out moment: After Vanessa and Jack’s antics the year before, nothing majorly outrageous took place in series two but the second run of the show is notable for Les Dennis. The TV star entered the house as his marriage to Amanda Holden was breaking down following her much-publicised affair with Neil Morrissey. Viewers saw a broken man on screen, with the star later confessing he had an ’emotional crisis’ in the house.

Series three 2005

Winner: Mark ‘Bez’ Berry. The third series was the first series of Celebrity Big Brother to air since 2002, as Teen Big Brother: The Experiment and Big Brother Panto were broadcast in its place. It was also the first series where the celebrities were being paid for their appearance rather than taking part for charity, while there was also a winners pot, with Happy Mondays star Bez taking home £50,000 on Day 18. Before entering the house Bez was declared bankrupt.

Peace: Mark 'Bez' Berry won the third series in 2005, which was the first in CBB history where celebs were being paid for their appearance rather than taking part for charity. He took home £50k after being declared bankrupt before he entered

Stand out moment: A late entry into the house provided one of the franchise’s most infamous lines. Brigitte Nielsen got a shock when her ex-mother-in-law Jackie Stallone entered the house on day five in the middle of a task. Her ‘yeah Jackie’ opening line has gone down in CBB legend. Despite Brigitte blaming Jackie for the collapse of her marriage to Sylvester Stallone, the two did actually make amends in the house. This series was also notable for it’s first ever walker, when Germaine Greer became the first ever housemate to quit the show after she complained about Brigitte and John being bullied.

Series four 2006

Winner: Chantelle Houghton. Series four featured a major twist when ten celebs and one ‘civilian’ entered the house. Chantelle had auditioned for the sixth non-celebrity series of the show but instead entered the CBB house as part of a secret mission to convince her star housemates she was a member of girlband Kandy Floss. She managed to fool her housemates after they ranked her the ninth most famous housemate in a task on Day four, before going onto win the show. As well as fame, the blonde who worked as a Paris Hilton lookalike, also got a marriage after she tied the knot with fellow housemate Preston from The Ordinary Boys, but they divorced ten months later.

Stand out moment: George Galloway’s inclusion in the show was controversial from the start as he was a sitting MP but it was the bizarre moment when he pretended to be Rula Lenska’s pet cat, complete with purring that really tickled viewers.

Series five 2007

Winner: Shilpa Shetty. 2007 saw perhaps the most shocking series ever of the show when Jade Goody, who previously appeared on Big Brother, along with model Danielle Lloyd and S Club star Jo O’Meara accused of racism following their persistent bullying of Bollywood star Shilpa, who went on to win the show.

Stand out moment: Ofcom received more than 44,500 complaints about the Shilpa bullying row which even sparked a diplomatic row when the UK and Indian governments got involved. The incident led to CBB being cancelled in 2008. While Shilpa went on to win the show, Jade appeared on the Indian version of the show a year later in an attempt to redeem herself. While in the house she was told she had cervical cancer and left the house. Jade died of cancer in March 2009.

Stand out moment: Sugababes star Mutya Buena walked out of the house after 15 days, later criticising producers for failing to reprimand ‘sex pest’ Coolio over his behaviour. The singer said she was disgusted by Coolio’s attempts to get physically close to her and often was seen fighting off his advances on the Channel 4 reality show.

Stand out moment: Aside from the fact that the now US President’s ex wife Ivana Trump starred, this series was a less than memorable affair. Not even the inclusion of Katie Price’s ex Dane Bowers with Reid in the house livened things up.

While Tiffany Pollard was responsible for one of the most iconic moments in the reality show’s history. The American reality personality will forever be remembered for the moment she was informed, in confidence, by David Bowie’s ex-wife Angie, that the rock star had died of cancer — only for a hysterical Tiffany to assume Angie was referring to their housemate at the time, David Gest. Becoming hysterical, the actress ran outside to break the news to the housemates sat in the smoking область, who headed straight to the bedroom to check whether David was indeed breathing. With the comedian asleep, the rest of the housemates confronted Angie, asking why she would say such a thing. She then realised how the situation had become mixed up.

Tiffany ended up coming in fourth place on the series and was so lauded for the incident that she manufactured ‘David’s Dead’ T-shirts after exiting the show. However, when David actually did die a few months later, her management pulled the T-shirt line her website. After her reps revealed the product — selling for £24.99 — had been taken off the market, Tiffany took to Twitter to pay her own tribute to the late music producer. She wrote: ‘I’m so sad to hear about the passing of.My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family.’ Police and paramedics were called to the luxury Four Seasons Hotel, in Canary Wharf, at around 10.20AM on April 12 2016. 62-year-old Gest died from a stroke, having recently suffered from pneumonia and high blood pressure.
