Wheelchair-bound man falls to death down escalator on DC Metro

A disabled man died in DC after falling off his wheelchair backwards down a Metro escalator.

The accident happened in Columbia Heights Station when the man tried to ride the ‘up’ escalator in his motorized chair.

He had nearly reached the top when he tumbled backwards and crashed at the bottom, with his chair landing on top of him, according to Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly.

The incident happened the Northwest station at about 1.30pm. He’d initially tried to take an elevator, but when it didn’t arrive after 10 or 15 seconds he lost patience and opted for the escalator.

Metro officials said the elevator is fully functional and was working normally at the time.

The disabled man was then seen holding on to the handrails on either side as he rode the escalator.

After the fall, station managers and bystanders rushed to help him, but he was critically injured.

‘I seen a guy laid out. I saw his legs was all bloody really bad. I saw about 10 people crowded around him,’ witness Shaun Stepney told NBC Washington.

Paramedics found him at the bottom of the escalator and rushed him to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Information on the nature of his injuries has not yet been released.
